In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
